Digital transformation only stops for Christmas

In Google Trends, the analytical tool for tracking searches in Google, the search phrase ”digital transformation” has seen a steady increase in interest over the last five years. And it looks like it’s going to keep growing. The exception is Christmas. We all seem to take a break from transforming our existance at Christmas, but not even the World Cup manages to make a dent in the curve.

And of course, to become proactive, forward-looking bodies, most organizations realize that they must now reinvent themselves at the core. This requires a shift towards digitally transformative technologies that will elevate back office processes, operations processes and commercial processes into a new digital space.

But digital transformation isn’t just about moving existing systems to new computing models. It is also all about using a new digital fabric to innovate for the future. In the digital space development is driven by the interaction of new technology, (e.g. cloud computing), new consumer behavior (e.g. mobile), and new business models (e.g. sharing).

This might seem just a logical extension of other R&D efforts for many organizations but constitutes a radically new way of acting in many sectors, e.g. government. It’s not always the type of thing you expect the public sector to talk about, but this is where new products and services are developed and brought online, new public-private channels are forged and new business models created and launched.
